High School Performances

  • The festival is open to all middle and high school jazz ensembles
  • Both large and small ensembles are encouraged to participate
  • All high school performances will be in the auditorium.
  • The stage will have risers for trombones (8 inch) and trumpets (16 inch) as well as a drum kit, amps and grand piano.
  • All ensembles will need to provide their own sticks, cymbals, and electronic instruments.
  • Each ensemble will have 25 minutes for set-up and performance.
  • Each ensemble should play two or three selections of contrasting styles. Improvisation is strongly encouraged.
  • Two copies of each score must be submitted at check-in with measures numbered.
  • Each ensemble will perform for two clinicians who will provide written and tape recorded comments.
  • Each ensemble performance will be professionally recorded and the director will receive a copy of the CD.
  • Outstanding soloists will be recognized at the evening concert
  • School performances are free and open to the public

Ensemble Clinics

  • After the stage performance each ensemble will move to the band rehearsal room for a clinic with one of the clinicians.
  • The clinic will focus on areas of concern the clinician heard during the stage performance.

Master Classes

  • Individual Instrument Master Classes to be announced.
  • Topics for the clinic will be announced.
  • Admission to the clinic is free and is open to the public

Evening Concert

  • The evening concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Northwestern High School Auditorium
  • After the soloists awards presentation, the concert will continue with the Steve Smith's Jazz Legacy.
  • The concert will finish no later 10:00 p.m.
  • Tickets for the concert are $15.00 for performing ensemble members and chaperones but must be ordered in advance. Each participating director will receive one complimentary ticket.
  • Tickets for the general public are $20.00 for adults and $15.00 for students and can be reserved by submitting the ticket reservation form or can be purchased at the door, only 150 tickets are available.
