CLINICIANS
Jim Ketch - Professor Ketch enjoys a varied career as both professional trumpeter and educator. As a Bach trumpet artist and clinician for the Selmer Corporation, Mr. Ketch is in demand as both a classical and jazz artist. As Music Director of the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra (NCJRO) he has established himself as an outstanding performer in both traditional and contemporary jazz styles. He has performed in over a dozen conferences of the International Trumpet Guild and has chaired several events at those conferences including the 1998 Jazz Improvisation Competition at the University of Kentucky-Lexington. As a freelance musician he is frequently heard with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra, in pit orchestras for touring Broadway productions and the North Carolina Theater, with singing groups like The Temptations, The Four Tops, Ben E. King, and the Manhattan Transfer, and with school bands and jazz ensembles across the country.
Wally West - Wally West, Yamaha clinician, commercial saxophonist and band leader is tearin' it up" in the Bible Belt. Wally has been "handling" the saxophone quite well for the last 20 years. If you're not familiar with his playing, not to worry, you may have already heard him. He has backed a cross section of performers that includes jazz greats, original Motown groups, name big bands and even some of country music's finest. Whether playing with Tony Bennett, Smokey Robinson, The Dorsey Orchestras, Roy Clark or Vince Gill, Wally is at home behind the saxophone, regardless of style.
Dan Haerle - As of the summer of 2002, Dan Haerle retired from full-time teaching. He was a faculty member in the Jazz Studies Division of the College of Music at the University of North Texas for 25 years (Regents Professor for the last 10 years). He taught Jazz Piano, Jazz Fundamentals, Advanced Jazz Improvisation, Jazz MIDI, Graduate Jazz Improvisation, Rhythm Section Master Class and he supervised the jazz chamber music program. He directed the Jazz Strings and a keyboard ensemble called The Zebras. He taught the courses in basic MIDI theory, sequencing and jazz notation. He has recorded many Jamey Aebersold playalongs, has several jazz text books published, is an active jazz clinician nationally and internationally and has had a great deal of performing experience.
Dan was inducted into the International Association of Jazz Education "Hall of Fame" at the annual conference in Toronto on January 9, 2003. The IAJE Hall of Fame Award honors individuals whose musical contributions and dedication to jazz education over the past 25 years have created new directions and curricular innovations for jazz education worldwide.
Dan currently is on modified service at UNT and teaches an on-line jazz theory course which he developed while on sabbatical in the spring of 2000. He is available for residencies and concerts with his trio.
